Personal Cars for Business Travel Risks

Would be grateful to hear views on the use of personal cars for occasional business travel, especially where an employee isn't eligible for a company car or allowance. Do you allow this? If so, how do you ensure that the personal car is roadworthy and properly maintained/serviced, and that the employee has appropriate insurance? Do you believe that proper checks and/or employee declarations sufficiently manage the corporate liability risks?

We don't currently allow business travel using a private car, and I'm keen to investigate ways of doing so which are more cost effective and efficient, without exposing us to unacceptable risk. Thanks for all input.

Thanks Suzanne and Ian for your helpful input

We also allow employees to use their own car for business travel. We have clear guidance in our policy and also a declaration when they submit their mileage claims. In addition we do an annual check for any employees that have claimed business mileage in their own car.

We do allow employees to take business trips in their own vehicle and will reimburse them for personal mileage. We have a specific 'drivers guidance' and UK car policy in place which outlines the expectations for employees travelling on business, including insurance, MOT, etc. We expect all employees to be aware of these policies and comply with them. No addtional checks are in place.
